What cars do y'all suggest buying?

Hey, my current beater is giving out on me and it's only worth the scrap value at this point. I'm looking to get something used that won't be expensive on the onset but also won't be a money pit. I'm also not interested in a truck, I'd ideally like a car but I'm open to a crossover or Minivan. For context, I live close to but not directly in the Chicago Metropolitan area.
