$658 for a North Carolina license plate?!

I just moved here from Texas, and was dutifully getting my North Carolina license plates. The DMV charged me $658 for a new plate which I think is absolutely bonkers, and I can't find anything on the NCDOT page to reflect anything close to that. Can someone please elucidate? Was I somehow overcharged? The lady indicated that about $200 of that was a property tax, which I thought was strange because I don't own property.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your responses! That makes sense that the car is my property, and it looks like a big chunk is the one-time title transfer to NC ($250). I'm still a bit flabbergasted but it looks like it's all above aboard.
