Ezmarie or Esmeray? (Girl)
I'm considering this name for upcoming baby girl and curious to hear reactions to the spelling/pronunciation. I love the meanings for different reasons, but honestly the spelling and pronunciation are what actually matter for everyday use. We live in the US and speak English, for context.
Options:
- Ezmarie = ez-muh-ree
- Esmarie = es-muh-ree
- Esmerie = es-meh-ree
- Esmeree = es-meh-ray
- Ezmerie = ez-meh-ree
- Esmeray = es-mur-ay
Meanings/Background:
Ezmarie variations seem to have French origins combining Esmee (loved/esteemed) and Marie (little ocean/Biblical Mary). Esmeree could also be emerald/green, similar to Spanish Esme/Esmeralda.
- We love the “-marie” as its homage to my husband’s grandmother, my great aunt, and a revolutionary hero from my husband’s country. Middle name would be Ezmarie Rose to honor that hero, Marie Rose. (Our son is also named after revolutionary hero from his country, and I love it.)
- “Loved little ocean” is fitting because my husband is from an island, and a French creole island too
- My family’s names, including last name, are all very French and I like the idea of continuing this tradition
- My birthstone/fav color is green 😊
Esmeray is Turkish, meaning dark moon.
- We have no connection to Turkey at all, so at best its random, at worst its appropriative.
- I love the dark moon meaning: the last dark, mysterious, introspective night before the new moon. My husband and I are both moon lovers and he was hoping to find a moon name.
- I just love how Esmeray looks and sounds. The “-rye” ending is so cute and could be a nickname, but I think English speakers will always mispronounce it “-ray".
Thank you beautiful strangers!
