A packed hillside patiently awaits Jack’s approach shot - Riviera Country Club, 1983

One of Jack Nicklaus’ record 19 major championship runner-up finishes came at Riviera Country Club in the 1983 PGA Championship.

25 year old Hal Sutton outlasted the Golden Bear and the rest of the field to win his first major championship. He led wire-to-wire after impressive scores of 65 and 66 on Thursday and Friday.

The ‘83 PGA was also the first ever major championship to award a six-figure winner’s share of the purse. Sutton took home an unprecedented $100,000 for his victory. ($35,000 less than the players received who finished T26 at last year’s PGA Championship.)
