Is diving East Malaysia safe?

Solo traveler here, considering getting certified while traveling in Malaysia early January! I’ve only gone diving once in my life in Tahiti. Considering getting my PADI OW and AOW certification (package deal from ScubaJunkies) in Mabul/Kapalai, includes 1 day at Sipadan.

I’ve read a lot on eastern Malaysia terrorists and kidnapping concerns between 2000-2020 specifically targeting dive tourists. I’ve also read a lot about current safety measures put in place by local military to deter these attacks. Has anyone been diving here in the last few months and can comment on their experience regarding safety?

If I’m traveling mostly on the west side of Malaysia does it make more sense to stick to dive sites on that side of the country (like Tioman Island and Perhentian Island) and not trek over to the east side for Sipadan? Although if I’m already in Malaysia, it feels like I should make it work since Sipadan is so highly rated….

Welcome any comments regarding ScubaJunkies, diving this time of year, solo traveling here, or anything else you may feel is relevant! The cost of the package is a lot for me and I want to make the best decision I can. Appreciate any advice!
