Can I use soda crystals (sodium carbonate) for a cook instead of baking soda or will it fuck up my product?

I don't have normal baking soda, only the soda crystals normally used for laundry and cleaning (think its sometimes called soda ash or washing soda, comes in a green box) I know its chemically different from baking soda but was wondering if anyone has used this for a cook before and had any success, or will it just be a waste of time?
