Planning a birthday in NYC- June

Hello people with fab knowledge. I’m planning a birthday trip in June to NYC and need suggestions on places to stay and stuff to do. Probably, 5-6 nights trip (Should I do less/more?). Traveling with kids so will probably be getting a rental from the airport. Open to the idea of staying outside the city as well and drive to NYC for touristy stuff.
