The Importance of Dialogue in Radiology: Overreliance on written communication is hazardous

As a radiologist with 40 years experience, I argue that better collaboration between radiologists and other clinicians is needed in order to reduce medical error centered around the written radiology report. Most communication between caregivers takes place via the written record. Text reports simply can't capture all of the nuance on the images. They cannot dynamically address the questions of the clinician, cannot persuade or argue. There is no dialogue.

I hope you have time to read my blog post before commenting. I address the motivation for this idea there, and acknowledge some of the practical implications, positive and negative.
