Has There Been a Shift in the Culture of Commander?
A few years ago, I went through a phase where I consumed a lot of online edh content (mostly youtube videos) but played very little actual magic. I was left with the impression that everyone was out here having detailed rule zero discussions and that several strategies were soft-banned by the social contract.
Nowadays, I play magic frequently and my group is very laissez-faire. That's just my own anecdotal experience, but I also see people on this sub commenting and upvoting comments about how everything should be permitted and it's your deck's responsibility to have an answer. People who complain about traditional boogiemen like stax, infect, etc. get met with pushback from people that these strategies have a place in the meta. You also see this philosophy expressed by "newschool" content creators like Salubrious Snail and Trinket Mage.
I will admit to being a fan of this more freewheeling/permissive philosophy and I feel like the absence of a strict social contract ironically makes the game more approachable for newbies. I always rolled my eyes when I'd see comments about pods where boardwipes and counterspells are "poor form".
Am I right that we're experiencing a cultural shift on commander?
