Advice Needed: Switching Careers to Concrete Finishing in Ontario

Hey everyone,

I’m 35 and currently stuck in a dead-end job as a support agent, but I’m ready for a big change. I’m looking to reskill as a concrete finisher, focusing on driveways and house foundations, with the idea of getting into ICF down the line.

I live in Ontario and am physically active, so I’m not worried about the physical demands of the job. My main challenge is finding a way to break into the industry. I’d really appreciate any advice you have on:

  1. Schools or programs: Are there part-time or weekend training programs in Ontario for concrete finishing or construction?
  2. Getting started: What’s the best way to get my foot in the door? Should I look for apprenticeships or start with smaller jobs to build experience?
  3. Tools or certifications: Are there any must-have tools or certifications I should focus on first?

Any other tips or insights would be hugely appreciated, especially from anyone who’s made a similar career switch or works in the industry. Thanks in advance!
