Package lost in transti?

I had a package sent from Australia to the U.S. It got to the airport and Auspost says it was given to carrier (airline.) This was 7 days ago. No update on Australia post website. USPS says item is still processing with sender.

Is this common to have a package stuck in transit between 2 different countries for this length of time, by I suppose, the airline?
