Was CDG a great leader? Explain like I’m five?

American here. I really know very little about Charles De Gaulle, but I have seen his speech on the BBC and of course flown into an airport named after him many times. I believe he fled France during its occupation and as soon as he got back, kicked out the liberating Americans? Is he a hero? Please explain if he is, why. Like I’m 5.
