Beginner: How to practice astrophotography in city?

I have a camp trip planned for the end of the summer and I wanted to practice before then. I'm very new to astrophotography and live in bortle 8? area. What are the best ways to practice so I get more comfortable with my camera and take better photos? During my camping trip, I intend to photograph the milky way as well as some nebulae.
