What effect would the creation of sentient AI have on spirituality and religions?
The creation of a sentient AI (superintelligent or not) would obviously have a huge impact on human psychology, particularly in the west. Most western religions maintain that there is a distinction between humans and animals, primarily through the concept of a 'soul'.
But if a machine exhibits sentience, yet has been created entirely through human technology (or recursive self-improvement from a human-created base), then that pretty firmly quashes the concept of a soul, as sentience has spontaneously emerged from inorganic matter.
There will, of course, be quite a few people and organisations who dispute the sentience of such an AI, regardless of evidence, as it conflicts with their existing worldview. However, it is likely to still have a significant impact on religious organisations and human beliefs. Do we have any information on what might happen?
